Bermondsey Street Festival—the village fête that takes over SE1—returns on Saturday 21 September 2024 with its trademark blend of food, crafts and live music. At London Bridge | WelcomeX (formerly Twitter)
A new team keeps a 17‑year tradition alive
Long‑time organiser Bill Owen has stepped back, but the baton is safe in local hands. Gena Johns of London Glassblowing now leads the volunteer committee, joined by George Cobb of Daniel Cobb Estate Agents—and yes, the BSE1 crew is pitching in too. Together we’ve secured Southwark Council funding and rallied scores of independent traders to make sure the festival’s future is as bright as its bunting. bermondseystreet.london
What to expect on the day
- Stalls 11 am – 5.30 pm: 100‑plus makers, designers and community groups line the car‑free street, turning it into a mile‑long market. Think small‑batch hot sauce, locally thrown pottery and vintage vinyl. Bermondsey Street Festival
- Food & drink: Bermondsey’s restaurants roll out pop‑up kitchens—perfect for grazing on bao, bratwurst or a classic Manze’s pie. Craft beer, natural wine and gelato keep everyone fuelled.
- Music until 7 pm: Expect everything from brass bands to soul DJs on the main stage, plus acoustic sets outside cafés for laid‑back listening.
- Family zone: Leather Market Gardens host maypole dancing, a dog show and wellbeing workshops, giving kids (and pups) room to run. Bermondsey Street Festival
Why it matters
For stallholders, the festival is more than a good day’s trade; it’s a showcase for Bermondsey’s creativity and resilience. For locals, it’s a reunion—an annual excuse to bump into neighbours, toast the end of summer and (if history holds) bask in a burst of September sun. We’ve been coming for a decade and can vouch: nothing beats seeing the street packed with Londoners who’ve made the trip just for the vibe.
