The best vegan-friendly restaurants in Bermondsey and SE1

We are privileged to have so many amazing plant-based options available in Bermondsey and we have spent some time recently venturing around the area to share with you some of our favourite plant-based and vegan eateries. Which one is your favourite?

Hakata

You’ve hit the spot when it comes to the delicious soul warming ramen from Hakata.

The restaurant is situated on the corner of Newham’s Row and Bermondsey street, and consists of high stool benches and small tables for a very relaxed dining experience.

Begin your Japanese culinary journey with their vegan gyoza, steamed soft buns, edamame and some sake.

Once you’ve finished your starters, it’s time for ramen and with five different vegan options on their menu, it’s there is always something for you from Tonkotsu, Shoyu, Kumamoto and Miso (spicy option available) base. Additionally, you have the option to ‘pimp your ramen’ – there will always be a reason to return again and again.

Omoide

Another Japanese favourite! Omoide, meaning memories, so whether you’ve been to Japan or not, Omoide will make sure you’ll have a meal to remember.

The concept is grab & go, perfect for a sunny day picnic in Tanner Street park.

Offering delicious ‘Shokuji’ bowls full of Japanese flavours you can choose from the standard vegan option or create one yourself. Begin with a base of sushi rice or a salad plus their 5-grain sushi mix, following you can go all-in with the toppings & dressings. Our favourite toppings are yuzu ponzu dressing, miso aubergine, edamame and pickled carrots with crispy shallots and sesame on top.

Craving something warmer?

Make sure you’ll try the miso dashi, a comforting broth containing udon noodles, tofu, seaweed and more.

We recommend beginning your evening with one of the banana fritters or coriander root broths. Following that, when it comes to the main course, think of traditional veggie & tofu curries, Thai fried rice, noodles, nourishing side dishes and many more vegan Thai classics.

Horn OK Please

Horn OK Please (HOP) was established in June 2011 to transport this from the streets of India to the streets of London. More than just food, HOP aims to provide a portal to a culture where street food is an integral part of everyday life.

They have kept the recipes as original and simple as they are on the streets of India.

All of their dishes are vegetarian and most dishes can be made vegan and/or gluten-free.

Palace Culture

In the past a lot of vegans have been sceptical when it came to vegan cheese, but Palace Culture will blow your mind.

Made from organic cashews and almonds, then fermented with actual live cultures; you’ll be entering a vegan ‘Cheeze’ heaven. It looks, tastes and smells like actual cheese!

The Kimchi & Truffle cheese is one of our favourites, you can use it for a classic cheese plate or mix it in to create a truffle cheese pasta - we can’t get enough of it! We also can recommend Ricotta & Truffle spread, to ‘Camemvert’, ‘Moldy Goaty’, Cranberry, Smoked Paprika and more.
