People of Bermondsey : Meet local resident Emma

Please introduce yourself

I am Emma. My day job is as an event planner in The City.

I also run the Instagram page @shadowoftheshard

Bermondsey to you in three words

Historical, vibrant, welcoming.

How did your Bermondsey story begin?

My journey in Bermondsey started in 2013 when I moved into my first rental in London. After a brief stint in Clapham, I realised no where else could compare to Bermondsey and I bought my first home here soon after.

How long have you lived in SE1?

I have lived here on and off for 7 years, but it is has been my permanent home since 2017, which is when I started my @shadowoftheshard Instagram account.

What’s a typical Saturday morning for you in SE1?

Saturday morning always starts with a trip to Borough Market to get all the tasty treats needed for the weekend. Coffee in hand, we will peruse the stalls looking for inspiration for our Sunday night dinner. My favourite coffee spots are The Gentleman Baristas, WatchHouse or Roasting Plant. Following that, we will go for a bit of street food and a cocktail at Maltby Market. My favourite places to eat there at the moment are Duck Frites and PaddyCakes. The Negroni from Little Bird is also a must try!

Where would you recommend a first date in SE1?

Cocktails at Bermondsey Arts Club, a former public toilet turned into a art deco-style hideaway. Then dinner at Angela Hartnett’s restaurant Café Murano. I would always recommend counter seating. Watching the chef’s at work gives you a great jump start to a conversation.

If you could buy any building in SE1, which would it be an why?

I would love to live in Trinity Village. A Historical Village - leafy, tranquil and steeped in history!
