From the Street to the Basement
The head chef, hails from Mexico and brings that fire to every plate.
We tried the fish tacos (juicy, flavoursome, gone in 60 seconds), a plate of perfectly zesty ceviche, and star of the show the grilled prawn tacos, which honestly were the best we’ve had since Oaxaca. Everything was fresh, punchy and full of flavour. The guacamole was also next level along with the Chicharron - a must-try!
Cocktails from the Bottle Bar
While sitting outside with a view of The Shard, we sipped drinks from the Bottle Bar, a shorter edit of the full menu, but just as considered. The mezcal paloma was smoky, citrusy and genuinely delicious. Once we moved inside, it was margaritas all night, and no regrets.
The Vibe Inside
The main bar is in a Victorian basement, but the mood is more tropical speakeasy than underground dive. Think: moody lighting, gold-toned decor, palms, and what the team calls “Tropicalifornication.”
It’s all table seating (no bar awkwardness), and every spot feels intentional, whether you’re on a date or catching up with a mate. The soundtrack? Early 2000s gold. The vibe is hip but never snobby. You’ll find locals sipping neat mezcal next to large groups of friends swapping plates of tacos. The staff are cool, down-to-earth, and happy to talk you through the drinks list without any of the fluff.
Sound and Style
Music is a big deal here. The Nine Lives Sound System was custom built for high-fidelity listening, and it shows. Whether you're chatting, sipping, or staying for a second (or third) round, the sound carries you through the night.
They’ve also got branded bottles and merch, if you’re the kind of person who likes to take a piece of the night home.
Who’s It For?
Nine Lives hits that rare balance: a date-night dream (dark corners and cocktails) and a solid mate’s night (tacos, tunes and service without the fuss). It’s vibey, fun, and surprisingly low-key for somewhere this good. If you want drinks, a bite to eat and a boogie - this place is for you!
